“I like this one except for the color.”

You are out shopping for furniture with your fiance. You find a couch that you like, but you don't like the color. You tell him:

I like this one except for the color.

like (something) except for (something)

When you like something in general, but there's one characteristic or part that you don't like, you say "I like it except for ___." For example, you can say:

  • except for the color
  • except for the size
  • except for this part over here

When the problem you have isn't with a part, but with an overall quality, there are two ways to express it:

I like this one except that we already have something in that color.

I like this one except for the fact that we already have something in that color.

Another example:

I liked it except that the fish was a little overcooked.

I liked it except for the fact that the fish was a little overcooked.
