Thoughts about downloadable lessons

A couple of PhraseMix Premium members have asked about getting a way to download lessons. I've been thinking about how this should be formatted, and I'd like to get your feedback.

Single files

It would be pretty easy to make all of the separate sentence files downloadable. I see a few problems with this:

  • Would it be useful to listen to just the sentences by themselves, without seeing the illustration or reading the situation and explanations? It seems confusing to me.
  • There are a lot of files, and they're all really short. If you loaded them all into your music player, you'd end up with a really long list of files. It would be hard to navigate and keep track of where you are.

Combined files

I could easily combine several of the sentences into one file. This would take care of the problem of having too many files, though it wouldn't solve the first problem above.

I would also need to consider what would be the best way to combine them. I could do:

  • 50 sentences per file, going in random order. This would give you a lot to listen to at once.
  • Today's sentence repeated 3 times, followed by a review of the last 5 or 6 lessons. You'd need to download a new file each day.
  • A collection of sentences on a particular theme, like "compliments". This might make it a little easier to understand the background of each sentence.

There are a lot of other possibilities. Can you think of something you'd like?

Recording extra information

I do plan on eventually recording more information for each lesson, aside from just the key example sentence. There are a few points to consider:

Some people have asked for a full recording of the entire text of the lesson. I'm not sure if that's a good idea. It seems like it would be boring to listen to all of that. It's good to read the explanation of each phrase once, but do you need to hear it again and again? I wouldn't want to.

  • The description of the situation that comes before every key sentence seems useful. That's the first thing I'd like to record.
  • The other example sentences in each lesson also seem useful. I'll need to figure out a good way to introduce each one.

So what do you think? Do you really want downloadable lessons? Do you have a strong opinion about how they should be formatted? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
